(Post)Weekend Rap Up: New Wiz Khalifa ft Snoop Dogg, J. Cole, Chamillionaire ft. Big K.R.I.T, Clyde Carson ft Game, The Cool Kids & more
Better late than never. Please forgive me by listening to this very happy song. I’m pretty sure it’s the piano that does it for me. Sounds like a college musical. And hey, if Wiz can still afford to live that lifestyle throughout the rest of his life, then more props to him. Snoop on the other hand is not young nor very wild. I guess he’s free for the most part, but pretty sure he has a wife and some kids. Just sayin.

“Im the supplier of that fire and the kerosene
dont wanna make a scene, those ain’t no shots fired
just know the shit that im dropping take u a lot higher
these niggaz bitches on the low, they Mrs Doubtfire”
J. Cole is the truth. I say it all the time, but when you listen to Cole, you NEED to listen to it AT LEAST 3 times just to catch all the lyrics and punchlines. And if that doesn’t impress you, then please, stop listening to Rap. One less bogus consumer out there, then maybe one less bogus single from my favorite artists’ label.

I don’t know why, I just never really got into Chamillionaire. I respect the shit out of dude, especially his attitude and rap “values”, for lack of better word. Maybe its his voice I’m not feeling, but whenever I do take the time to listen I really like what I’m hearing. Gotta discover me some more Cham. I actually just saw the video for this song pop up on a couple blog outlets and that was my first listen. Big K.R.I.T is my guy, dude’s pimpish flow is a beautiful thing. RIP Pimp C.

This is some super smooth shit right here. Joe Budden may state otherwise, but this IS something to ride to. For me, just going for a drive with no destination is pretty therapeutic. Of course, I need to have some new music on the deck. My car is actually my favorite place to listen to music. When I’m driving, I feel like I really have time to just listen without being distracted, or sidetracked. How bout these gas prices? yeeeessh. However you like to get your music fix, add this to the list. Visions of Warren G come to mind. Side Note: Producer’s name is Scoop Deville so you know it’s classy.

A. Gotta rep the Chi. And B. This beat is pretttttay nice. Gets better every time you listen to it, I promise. The Cool Kids always got something fresh, out of the ordinary. That’s what being cool is really all about though. Good work kids. This is the midwest Winter anthem right here.

I’ve been sitting on this one for a while but just haven’t found a great place to include it in. I guess I could have just created it’s own post, not like it’s undeserving. Actually, the more and more I listen to it, the more I think it should have its own post. Well, I’m already 50 words deep….This is super funky right here, nuff said. Regulate melody with a helluva kick, and snare. Check it while I wreck it.

I really can’t think of anything to write about right now besides how I’ve noticed myself progressively posting less frequently. I apologize for this, but there are a couple forces in action. One, I am no longer bedridden from foot surgery and am attempting to have what seems to be called a “social life.” And two, I am allowing my job to make me miserable and lazy as shit 5 nights a week….really need to do something about this soon. Anyway, it’s the weekend, so let’s not get depressed about work again just yet. This is a fun song and a quality mash up including “Say Yeah” and “Helena Beat”. Going off the Foster The People half of the song, I’ve been waiting for an excuse to post this “Pumped up Kicks” song since I started blogging (or a little over a month). Finally! I don’t know how popular this got with the hipster/indie crowd when it dropped last year, but I just found it a couple months ago and absolutely love it. I also included the newer released “Helene Beat” and another awesome Dubstep remix of Wiz – “Say Yeah”. I remember bumping that original Wiz a couple years ago when no one knew who the fuck he was. Shit can change pretty quickly; and THAT my friends, is good to know.

It’s Your Wifey’s Favorite Blogger! Music from Diddy/Dirty Money, Ciara, The Dream, YG, Brenton Duvall, Lil Wayne, Passion Pit, Bruno Mars + Reggae
So I use to download these DJ Ill Will R&B mixtapes and dude’s tag line was always (is still) “It’s your wifey’s favorite DJ!” Looking back (or reading back) it’s really not that funny, but he just said it in a really funny hype voice, and shit has always stuck with me. I guess that’s the point of a tag line though. Well done sir. My point is, I’ve never actually had a “wifey” that liked R&B music more than me….wait, let me start over. My point is, while these songs may be more ear pleasing to my female followers than most other songs I regularly post, that does NOT mean the fellas can’t enjoy some music to dance/juke/cuddle/poke to…too.
I rarely post songs I don’t like a lot. Almost never post a song I don’t like at all, unless it’s a huge name and I feel as though I should give my opinion. However, you may find a couple female friendly songs in this post that aren’t totally up to my liking. These next two jams off Diddy & Dirty Money’s “Last Train to Paris” definitely do not fall into that category. This some heat right here.

First of all this Ciara remix is nasty. Wayyyy better than the original, imo. Of course I’m diggin the piano. Ride it girl. And then this Dream shit has been out a while, but just in case you missed it. No wonder these two get along so well. I would also like to share that before curiosity quickly turned into disgust, I spent a day exploring the wonders of chatroulette. In one of maybe 4 conversations I had, I came across this dude and I could hear “Yamaha” playing in the background. Of course I recognized it and gave him shit right away for bumping The Dream in his dorm room while chatrouletting (?). But I actually ended up bullshitting with him for like 20 minutes bout music and basketball while he smoked a blunt and got ready to go out to the club…ohhhh college.

What’s funny is I think girls actually do really like this YG song. I’m not surprised though, I went to college. Small chance they may just not listen to the words though. Stupid shit like this takes some time to win me over…..I think I’m breaking though. (Side note – I just took another look for the dirty version and one of the first results was dude from thisis50 going off,“how the hell is it a g-mix if all I can find on the internet is clean versions.” ha.

I still think passion pit sucks, but here’s a couple quality remixes for your ears and possibly your body.

Absolute classics up next on the scroll. You’re especially gonna like this lil Reggae tangent I’m about to go on if you’re planning on going somewhere warm soon…or just if you like good music. mmm mmm. boom boom.

This beat and chipmunk’d sample makes me want to stick my chest out, move my hips real quick, and shake my shoulders like my arms don’t work…..I think I’m just doing the harlem shake to the rhythm of the silly voices but hey, it feels right. Anyway, not much that needs to be said bout this one. Been waiting on some new Chiddy for a minute now. If you can get past Xaphoon’s nasty production, Chiddy lays some quality rhymes. Good shit as usual.
Damn, this is picking up mad heat on the Hype Machine. I caught it last week and put it aside to post at a later date, but now I don’t wanna be too late and look like I just pick the most popular songs to post. I take pride in being able to spot good stuff quicker than other people….which really makes no sense at all, so we’ll just leave it at that. But hey, its better than the stupid kids that feel pretty sweet by simply letting you know they were the first ones to decide to leave a comment on a new song, without actually leaving a comment on the song. Anyway, I don’t care what you say, this cover by Yeasayer is the shit. And somehow I just gained a lot more respect for Seal?
Yeasayer – Crazy (Seal cover) (right click, save as to download)
Sticking with the theme, or title I should say, here’s a remix of “Crazy” from Gnarles Barkley with a verse from Joe Budden. Kind of interesting to listen to the different tone in which the word “crazy” is used from one song to the next. Almost like in one song, out of the ordinary or “crazy” is a good thing, and it should be a quality to strive for almost. Whereas in the next, being different makes you “crazy” in a bad way, and has one questioning their own feelings. Maybe they’re both talking about the same exact “crazy”, but just coming from different perceptions of life….or themselves. Honestly, I’m not entirely sure what Seal (or Yeasayer) is talking about the whole time, so I don’t really know. I always know what Joey is talking about though. That’s why I love rap, straight to the point. And there’s no one more straightforward in Rap since Pac, than Joe Budden. Just listen to the realness people.

Weekend Rap Up: New Music from Big Boi, Wiz Khalifa, Guy Harrison, Dave Raps, Consequence, and Drake
As you can see from my last post, I am a big fan of this Brother’s of Chico Dusty project with The Black Keys. After taking a closer listen, maybe second time through the mixtape, this quickly became my favorite track by far. Always take at least a second listen if it intrigues you in the least. Think about it this way, if the songs on the radio have the least replay value but catch your ear the quickest, then the songs that take a little bit longer to hook you are gonna be the ones that will have the most replay value. Trust me.

“Right here I got all these hoes look, I got these dopes shook
Cuz what I wrote took intelligence and elegance, its all makin hella sense
its obvious, like sittin in the room with an elephant”
I’ve said it before, coming out hard is important in rap. Dude’s flow is nice right of the bat and really stands out in this song. Not to mention the beat; perfect percussion. I can’t really figure out how to describe it otherwise, but I think that’s a good thing. Never heard of this guy…Guy Harrison until I saw this mixtape “The Deadline” over at TheHipHopUpdate.com. Good shit over there, it’s where I get most of my music. I really like this song.
Guy Harrison – 3 am Visions (right click, save as to download)
Another mixtape I took a listen to since dudes over at HHU shared it. Definitely a different sound. Haven’t gotten into a second listen yet, but this one stood out right away. Cool guitar, lots of bass, smooth flow..hook is lil weak. This song is off the mixtape H.Y.P.E. Really liking this one too.
Dave Raps – Alive (right click, save as to download)
Wiz just shared some more quality music for his fans with his latest mixtape release called Cabin Fever. Again, only took a quick listen but this song right here is fire. I love the “We are the champions” sample from Queen. Never heard it chopped up like this before though. Great beat, great hook, decent verses from Wiz, Trae and Big Sean. Cool variety of voices though.

I’ve been finding a lot of work from Consequence as of late, and I like it. Just took a listen to his latest mixtape release called Movies on Demand 2. Solid work. “Alphabet Boys” off this tape is nasty too, cons got skills. But this one felt pretty funky, so I wanted to share it.
Drake – 9 am in Dallas (right click, save as to download)
This is how I find out about alternative acts like The Black Keys. It was actually Hoodie Allen who first put me onto em when he fucked with this “Tighten Up” instrumental back on “Pep Rally.” I hear all my indie rock and much of my dance shit because of the rap collaborations also. You wanna talk about a genre of music listeners who have a diverse catalog, you’re talking about hip hop. I’m joking, of course…kinda.
Seriously though, rap and rock is like the best of both worlds for me. These two Grammy nominees make some quality work, and my ears are very pleased on both fronts (beats and lyrics). Big Boi is the shit, and I’m pretty certain I’ll be getting into some Black Keys right quick. I saw this project a while back, I think I while I was at work. Pretty sure I received an inbound call, got sidetracked, and then forgot to get back to it. Sheeeit, the story of my life (see Joe Budden below). Isn’t it great that you can actually hear Big Boi’s lyrics on this rock shit. Honestly, I don’t know what Big Boi is thinking with some of his crazy uptempo solo work. Well, it’s probably to make more money. But I still don’t understand how that album sells for $13 (?) a pop and this mixtape that just made it listenable again for me was free. Fuck it, I’m gonna take advantage. You should too.
Check out the mixtape by the dude Wick-It. Its called “The Brothers of Chico Dusty” and is a mash up of The Black Keys album “Brothers” and Big Boi’s “Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty.” Here are two outstanding jams off it.
