I don’t really know how to categorize these. They all have a slight hip hop influence, or at least infusion, but the genre itself escapes me. You may know by now, I’m not a big fan of genres anyway, or in a broader sense, categorizations. Whether it’s music, people, places, food….just let me decide for myself before you go and implant a subconscious bias in my brain. Sometimes I envy the blind. Wouldn’t it be something if we were only able to base our opinions on people based on the tone of their voice or they way they treat people? Obviously, after thinking about the number of difficulties that would actually go along with being blind, I take that back. But it would definitely be a lot different world. Now being deaf on the other hand is not something I can see (no pun) having ANY silver lining whatsoever. God, I am thankful for my health…and my music. What was the point of this post? Oh yea, music without a precursing classification. Take a listen and decide for yourself.
Between 1992 & 1994, Snoop Dogg, Nate Dogg [R.I.P], & Warren G released a few tracks advertising the alcoholic beverage brand St. Ides, these recordings would be paired with two additional unreleased tracks and released as a limited production promotional cassette.

During my time away, I thought to myself, “who cares if I stop writing, it’s not like this shit really matters. And who cares if I stop looking for/listening to new music, it’s not like I’ll miss anything that groundbreaking.” Wrong and wrong.
First of all, I know all too well the distress caused when one can’t seem to escape the four walls that surround their brain. It’s a dangerous place to permanently post up. The Funk, for me, is like that emergency exit. And second, if I stopped listening to the random mixtapes and underground leaks that have occupied my hard drive since the 8th grade, I would have most definitely missed out on this Asher Roth blessing. That’s right, Asher Roth. I know, I’m kind of surprised myself. But like ASAP Rocky’s LiveLoveA$AP mixtape, Pabst & Jazz has got that whole “mixtape sounding more like an album” shit going on.
This mixtape really has it all, from both a musical and a lyrical standpoint. Well, everything except that coke rap and obnoxious bass-line. Sorry I’m not sorry. It should be noted first that just as Clams Casino deserves to be credited for much of LiveLoveA$AP’s success, so should Blended Babies with Pabst & Jazz. The production is impeccable. I mean, this really is my type of shit though. You know that soulful, head-nodding, throwback Kanye-type of shit along with some soft, soothing, indie-type vocals.
As far as the lyrical flow goes, first you got that stupid off the top, nonsense-type spitting. But even when it sounds like Ash isn’t really saying anything, he’s still actually kinda saying something….if that makes sense. The first half of this tape is packed with rhyming reminiscent of another white rapper when he first came out.
and previously featured: Asher Roth – More Cowbell
Then you got the pen & pad, long look in the mirror introspective-type lyrics. One could easily see how the flow might suffer from actually having to put together words that not only rhyme, but actually tell a story and serve a purpose, but this is not the case for Ash. The second half of the tape gives insight into the real Asher Roth while spilling words of wisdom.
And of course you got some feel good, join the party, cypher-like sessions featuring a diverse set of quality MC’s. Side-note: I love me some GLC voice.
Asher Roth – Charlie Chaplin (ft. Phil Ade, GLC & Thurz)
And then this last one pretty much encompasses every aspect I’ve mentioned in this post so far. Seriously though, just scroll back up top and download the whole tape.
Weekend Rap Up: B.o.B. ft Andre 3000, Ed Sheeran ft Yelawolf, Termanology, Jakk Frost, Fabolous ft Meek Mill + Tyga ft. Wale, Fab, Meek, Jeezy & T.I.
I told ya’ll I’d be back with some more jams tonight. First things first though; how bout my boy Derrick Rose today? My favorite basketball players have always been point guards. Not just because I played PG in my days, but because in most cases, the odds are stacked against them in a sport that creates a natural advantage for those blessed with size. So every time Derrick Rose takes it to the rack, slashing through defenders and adjusting his release while floating through the air so to avoid the outstretched arms of those taller than him, you have to appreciate the skill required more-so than that of Lebron James jumping over lil’ Johnny Lucas and throwing down with two hands. Although, that was pretty nasty, too. As far as the game as a whole goes, with no Deng, no CJ, I gotta say that was one of the most satisfying L’s I’ve ever witnessed. Plus I hit the over for Rose total points (22.5) and Noah total rebounds (9.5), along with 2nd half spread (Bulls +1.5). I swear I don’t have a problem….onto the music…
This one dropped a while ago while I was boycotting being productive. B.o.B. use to be confused with Andre when he first started dropping tracks 3-4 years ago, so it’s cool to hear them go back-to-back. I never really heard the connection, but regardless, I like the combo. Of course, Andre wins in this one. Which I guess means Bobby wins too. This one gets some body parts moving.
B.o.B. – Play The Guitar (ft. Andre 3000) (right-click, “save as” to dl)
This is just a great song. I really like this British (I think) dude’s voice/vibe. And Yela meshes his flow perfectly with that vibe, while his voice is the perfect compliment. Shit is smooth as hell.
Ed Sheeran & Yelawolf – You Don’t Know (For Fuck’s Sake) (right-click, “save as” to dl)
It’s extrememely difficult for me to not enjoy any song utilizing the Play N Skillz “Freaks” sample. Absolute classic. Well, actually in their song they sampled this weird “Moments in Love” song themselves, but to the hip hop community, it’s now the “Freaks” sample. Anyway, outside of the sample, I really like a lot of what I hear from Term. Dude can flow.
Termanology – Speed It Up (ft. Anjuli Stars) (right-click, “save as” to dl)
This is another one I came across a lil while back but just never threw up on the Funk. I always appreciate a verse from Fab, and Meek Mill surprises me more and more each time I hear a new verse. These aren’t your typical lazy coke rappers.
Fabolous – You Don’t Know (ft. Meek Mill) (right-click, “save as” to dl)
This one is interesting to say the least. It’s hard to take seriously because of the hook, but it’s actually some quality storytelling. I really like the quirky beat too.
Jakk Frost – Dirty Uggs (right-click, “save as” to dl)
I posted the Wale and Meek version a while ago, but this one includes some more high profile verses to complete the “official” remix. Tyga got real lucky with this beat.

“But better days gotta come, I’m a good amount of bad, right amount of so wrong
And Heidi Klum left Seal which only proves my point, shit can only be ugly for so long”
Only Joey could get me hyped enough to get back to this blogging shit again. It’s hard to understand how people still sleep on dude. Only the best rappers find that beautiful balance between entertainment and enlightenment, and Budden’s got it. Listen to current events intertwined in his lines and tell me you’re not impressed. This is one of the best beats of 2011 and Joe straight kills it.
I still got a lot of other shit going on, but I’m no longer going to ignore new music completely in order to avoid the obligation I feel to share what I discover. More to come tomorrow.
Joe Budden – No Church In The Wild (right-click, “save as” to dl)
I love reading Henry Abbot, and pretty much all of ESPNs “TrueHoop” Blog. Dude knows his hoops. He also loves to hate on Kobe. Like I said, dude knows his hoops. No seriously, he has archives of data that kind of disproves the notion that “the black mamba” is really any better at the end of the game than a lot of other stars in the league. So he’s not really hating at all, just providing factual data in an op-ed fashion. For me, I really do just hate on him, because it’s pretty much all my opinion. But these opinions arrive from legitimate cues. Basically, my beef is this; his attitude just reeks of selfishness and vanity. Some might try to see that almost as a necessary evil on the court, like that killer instinct, or “the Jordan DNA”. But I feel like he’s different from Jordan in that Jordan really did just want to win. You seen him hugging that trophy? That’s real. What I see in Kobe is a whole lot of Hollywood. What’s Hollywood made up of? A whole bunch of actors and people who want to be famous. Kobe wants to be “THE man” more than “A man” on the winning team.
You can make the claim that Kobe Bryant’s teammates just don’t step up and that’s why he’s forced to do it all himself. But you could also make the claim that Micheal Jordan inspired his teammates to reach their ultimate potential, and that’s why he was able to trust them. What team was that last year who they (Micheal Wilbon for one) said completely maxed out their talent? Oh yea, that was the Bulls. Led by Derrick Rose.
So the dude I shared my season tickets with this year went this Bulls game at the UC while I stayed home and watched it streaming live from my computer (check out this site called FirstRowSports.tv, good looking out Bo) since I don’t have cable. I’m thrifty like that. Some call it cheap. Anyway, since I’ve been spending a lot more time watching basketball the past few weeks, as opposed to listening to new music, I thought I’d go ahead and do my best to totally rip off Bill Simmons and write a running diary as I watched the game tonight. It’s funny how it always turns into a good game when the diary is running, right Bill? He’s not reading this. Fuck.
Boozer refuses to put himself in a situation where he might have to foul. Terrible defense. Looked like he thought help would be there, and it wasn’t. He expects his teammates to save him. Thibs is an enabler….
Hawks shooting lights out, besides Josh Smith. Keep shooting Josh.
No shots for Rose yet….nevermind. Bucket.
Derrick Rose on the ball defense causes turnover, Deng finishes in transition. What about that defense from Derrick?
T. Macs legs are tired. Soon the rest of the Hawks’ will be too. Bulls D gonna be too much.
Korver, no respect. Called for foul when should’ve been a jump ball. I know he’s slow and white, but that does not mean every time he reaches it’s automatically a foul.
Keep shooting, J Smooth.
Rose is gonna take over, I know it. Bucket at the rim. End to end in about 3 seconds.
Bulls fans might start appreciating C.J. Watson, leader of the Bench Mob, after this one. Hawks D and Bench looking much better than the Bulls.
Omer. Hands! Please catch the ball.
Bulls O struggling without Rip. Looks like a game from last year. D. Rose might need to put up 40.
End of 1st
Seeing a lot of Refs waiting for the ball to land, or miss, to call the foul. Jo was clearly hacked, chucked it off the backboard, and still took until he was on the ground before the whistle blew. Good free throws
Rose on the bench. Need John Lucas III aka Johnny Trips to step it up.
Rose back in. Still Terrible O. Boozey needs to hit the open shots he’s getting. And take it strong. Misses 2 foot shot chucked off backboard after anticipating, but not receiving, any contact.
This is ugly. Neither team able to put the ball through the net. Boozey shooting good shots. When Derrick isn’t able to get in the paint and take over, and Deng isn’t hitting, or taking enough shots, Boozer is the next best option. Of course he’s broke as shit too.
Zone D almost completely taking D. Rose out of the game.
Bad offense is contagious. Boozer loses handle with no one around, throws the ball out of bounds.
D. Rose has still only shot once this quarter, missed tough floater. Stop deferring!
Good ball movement by bulls. Boozer holds onto it this time, AND scores.
Derrick misses jumper, but Boozer gets offensive board because it was the right shot to take. Make your fucking free throws Boozer!
This very well could be the worst game of Boozer’s career. At least it better be….
Omer does good….then does bad. And repeat.
I’m so glad I didn’t go to this game. Just awful.
Ronnie has lost all confidence on the offensive end already, but D. Rose is still passing him the ball every time down the floor. Brick, airball, miss, turnover. I know the D is really honing in on you Derrick, but please, just shoot the ball.
Bulls D making big stops. Korver misses transition three! Damn, crowd could have really brought the Bulls back after that one.
End of third
Kyle with a bucket…D. Rose block…miss by Kyle! But D. Rose with the three after the offensive board. Huge! Crowd alive
“M.V.P.!” Chants ring out through the UC as D. Rose knocks down a pair
D. Rose with two more trey bombs…shaking the shit out of everyone…knocking down free throws. This is what we’ve been waiting for!
Derrick with a corner kick to Deng for 3 reminiscent of that Heat game from a year ago.
Joe Johnson responds with a clutch trey of his own as the shot clock winds down.
Deng good cut, Taj good put back. Bulls basketball. Finally with 4 minutes left in the 4th.
Omer needs to take a seat. Too many missed defensive assignments/stupid fouls. Thank god Hawks are atrocious from the line tonight.
Bulls D still coming up big. Omer too. Bad shots by Hawks though.
So nervous when Korver has the ball in his hands and isn’t shooting..
Deng, with a Deng-like bucket through the lane.
Omer, again with the good D. Bulls ball with chance to take their first lead….
STOP IT D. ROSE! Derrick blows by Teague with a make at the basket.
Another backdoor lob! Fuck.
Teague misses both free ones! Hawks 13/23 from the line tonight.
16 seconds left down one….”everyone in the building knows where the ball is going”….remember that line about MJ from old Bulls tapes from the 90’s?
Derrick Rose with a TOUGH bucket OVER Josh Smith at the rim! Bulls take one point lead. He’s a bad man.
Bad call puts Horford on the line….but the ball don’t lie! 1 for 2 from the line. Tie game.
Damn, I wish I was at this game.
74-74 Tie Game
Let’s do this one more time…..”everyone in the building knows where the ball is going”….and Joakim makes a beautiful backdoor pass to Deng who finished at the rim after all the attention is drawn to Derrick! That’s why Joakim is in the game baby! Perfection. Bulls by 2
Joe Johnson misses tough shot on sloppy play. Gametime. Bulls
End of 4th
