Wifey Wednesday: RnB Edition Again! Miguel, Timbaland ft. Ne-Yo, Brooke Valentine ft. Tyrese + Jon Bellion
No time to talk/think/write but feel like I’m on a roll here, so I gotta throw this one up. The point of this blog is to share music….I think. So here you go; another dose of RnB tracks made for the wifey, dug by the whitey.
Twisted Tuesday: The White Panda ft. White Town x Dorrough, DOSVEC ft. Gotye x Biggie + Star Slinger ft H-Town
I got alliteration for days, ya got wack for weeks! Don’t fuck with The Funk….
This original White Town song is kinda creepy, but in a good way. Not in a gay way (there are definitely some gender role/sexual orientation issues that need to be cleared up in that one) I just like the quiet creepy dude’s voice over the quaint instrumental. But if you’re feeling a little unsure and insecure (like Andy from The Office) when listening to the lyrics but really like the beat, then The White Panda solves all your problems with a little help from their favorite mashable rap vocals.
I know, I know. If you listen to the radio on a regular basis you probably want to blow your brains out whenever that Gotye joint plays every 30 minutes. And if you’re constantly exploring the blogosphere you’re probably in the same boat based on the amount of revisions shat out of remix artists’ asses on a weekly basis. But in my opinion, DOSVEC does just enough to the beat in this one to keep it super fresh without abandoning what made the original so hypnotizing. And who can say no to Diddy when he says he wants a remix again?
Search for Star Slinger on The Funk and you’ll see we’ve been up on a couple solid joints of his. I found this one on Pigeon and Planes (great blog btw) top 10 of said remix master. On another note, remember how cool R&B groups of 3-5 dudes were in the 90’s and early 2000’s? Can’t we go back to that? Who am I kidding. Dudes’ egos are through the roof these days. And it’s a COT damn shame.
Mixtape Monday: Childish Gambino’s “Royalty”, Terry Urban ft. Nas x Amy Winehouse + Chi Duly x The Weeknd
I was out of town all weekend and still adjusting to life back at work so I haven’t been up on enough new music to share any specific jams. But it’s been too long since my last post, so here’s a couple of mixtapes I’ll be paying closer attention to over the next week that I think you might find appealing as well.
Donald finally released his latest mixtape effort on the 4th (I think) after weeks of leaks. Definitely looking forward to diving into this one to uncover what’s been running through Mr. Glover’s mind. Good thing I have a 45 minute commute to and from work….
Terry Urrrrrrrban has created what I can only assume to be another masterpiece, as I have yet to get into it. But the thought of Nas’ lyricism over some Amy Winehouse melodies has got me pretty excited. I have a feeling this will be one of those tapes that just doesn’t get old. Just press play and let it ride.
Chi Duly gives The Weeknd a little bit of a kick with this next one. It’s been out for a minute but I just came up on it, so in case you haven’t yet…
Wifey Wednesday: RnB Edition! Chris Brown ft Snoop Dogg & 2 Chainz, Jeremih ft Fabolous, Frank Ocean, Miguel, The Dream ft Pusha T, Mario + more
I’ve been waiting for some jams like these for a while now. Maybe I just don’t get after the RnB like I use to, which I don’t, but my timing was impeccable this time around, and consequently I have discovered some heeeeeat-ers. RnB heaters of course, but heaters none the less. First up, C. Breezy who, by the way, I’ve heard has the most
ignorant insane fans in the world….I said heaters, not beaters. I’m kind of over the whole Rihanna thing though. What I mean is, I don’t have a moral problem with liking Chris Brown’s music. It’s not like I ever really supported him monetarily in the past (thank you peer to peer and user sharing technology), and I’m definitely not going to now. Doesn’t mean I can’t still rock to it for free.
Aw shoot. How perfect is that title? Jeremih is back at it. I’m starting to remember why I love Hip Hop/RnB music so much. Fab HAS to be the best one verse surgeon in the game, right? Right!?
Frank Ocean is starting to remind me why I like Frank Ocean so much. As much as I enjoy “rocking” to the “heaters” (what? I can’t mockingly quote my own words?), this is really why I love RnB music. It’s just so damn fresh. I especially appreciate dudes like Mr. Ocean and Weekend and how they’ve led the way as of late to once again innovate the game.
Speaking of innovating artistic geniuses…is it just me, or does Miguel kinda get his Prince on with this one? I don’t mean to offend (if you’re a Prince fan), and honestly I don’t really know that much Prince music in the first place to warrant my judgement. But I don’t know, to me it kinda sounds like something Prince could fuck with. And honestly, If you know anything about Miguel, you wouldn’t be offended. But he kinda Robin Thickes it a lil with the whole whisper song voice too. Ay bitch, wait to you see my dick. Right? Not even a little?
The Dream is not much of an RnB innovator anymore. He did use to bring back memories of 112, once upon a time at least, and is undoubtedly one of the most immense contributors to the current landscape of the genre. The dude is just too good at what he does; why change now? Seriously, The Dream knows how to make an RnB jam. Remember this?
Next up we got my favorite from ColeCo’s EP – El Verano. The collection features a handful of solid remix material from some classic RnB smashes, including the featured, “I Wanna Be Down” by Brandy. Where he came up with “Ricky Smiley,” I have no idea. Remember when RnB wasn’t raunchy as hell and female artists had some
self respect class? When you compare a song like this from the 90’s, to Rihanna’s “Birthday Cake Remix” of today, you gotta feel a little uneasy about the youth/future of our country.
It’s getting late. I thought it’d be appropriate to finish this post off with a slow jam. Mari-Ohhhh! Bring it back middle school dance style. Please, quit your hating and enjoy.
Throwback Thursday: The Remix Version ft. Ron Isley vs Riot Earp + Mark Morrison & Biggie vs Viceroy
So apparently this type of reggaeish house jam below is considered moombahton? I would like to investigate the origins of something like that. Who was the person to come up with that nomenclature and how many songs did it take before people stopped laughing in their face after referring to it as such? *Sidenote #1: How smart do I sound when I feel like it?* You know, when does that “tipping point” occur? *Sidenote #2: If sociology and/or the way social trends/word of mouth spread, then you need to get your hands on Malcolm Gladwell’s The Tipping Point. If there were ever an appropriate time to say it, “epic” read.* I don’t remember what I was talking about, but upon hearing this song, I automatically heard Ice Cube’s “It Was a Good Day.” Surprisingly, it wasn’t even the instrumental that stood out, it was the “Do I….” from Ron Isley’s “Footsteps In The Dark.”Haha, how awesome is that? I can’t believe Mr. Biggs played such an integral role in more than just my favorite R. Kelly jams of all time.*Sidenote #3: SEE BELOW FOR THEE THROWBACK JAM OF ALL TIME!* And then check out Riot’s joint.
Ummm, I’m pretty sure nothing really needs to be said for this next one. If I post it, I meant it. The remix does the original justice. Unlike Mark’s ex-girl, I’m not lying to ya.
A 2nd entry from Viceroy tonight. I don’t feel like talking about silly remixes anymore. This one, as do the previous two jams, feel like summer. Good times in the Chi.
Wifey Wednesday: Major Lazer, Florence + The Machine vs Calvin Harris, Miguel, Frank Ocean, Usher + The Hood Internet
Being that it was
unfortunately probably my most popular weekly post, I had to bring it back. But I don’t have much time to rant about pointless shit (you’re welcome?) so I’ll just get right into it…
Ursher baby. Dude is like the Tim Duncan of R & B. He quietly keeps coming back to kill this shit! Add a bunch of “HWUH” courtesy of Ricky Ross and you got yourself a hit.
Majah Lazah! More mellow than what we’re use to hearing from these dudes, but amazing nonetheless. I wish I knew how to describe electronically produced sounds, because I would be more specific. But all in all, I love the sounds in this song. Soft female vocals always a plus as well.
I went to the Calvin Harris show in Chicago a couple months back…let’s just say I did not fit in. The wifey really likes this one. Me too. Gets the people goin!
I like to think that I discovered Miguel because I fell in love with that “Sure Thing” joint when I heard it off some obscure new school mixtape back in 09 before anyone gave a shit. Obviously, that is ridiculous. But still, I knew dude had talent right from the start. Well, seems like that talent is growing, and “it’s just a matter of time”, literally, before he get’s it all. This one works really well in the motivation department.
This is the first single/popworthy song I’ve heard from Frank, and I’m not mad either. I do like the obscure dark sounding shit from Mr. Ocean slightly better, but dude has gotta eat, right?
Just in case you weren’t feeling the electronic R & B vibe, you might like the indie.
What, just because I enjoy my own personal journeys with emo-esque rap music courtesy of Joe Budden and the like means I can’t also wanna get up and dance with somebody to the sweet sounds of Whitney (RIP) over some funky Chromeo beats?…I’m not afraid to say it, this shit gets me moving. I’m an eighties baby, baby!
