Wifey Wednesday: RnB Edition! Chris Brown ft Snoop Dogg & 2 Chainz, Jeremih ft Fabolous, Frank Ocean, Miguel, The Dream ft Pusha T, Mario + more

I’ve been waiting for some jams like these for a while now. Maybe I just don’t get after the RnB like I use to, which I don’t, but my timing was impeccable this time around, and consequently I have discovered some heeeeeat-ers. RnB heaters of course, but heaters none the less. First up, C. Breezy who, by the way, I’ve heard has the most ignorant insane fans in the world….I said heaters, not beaters. I’m kind of over the whole Rihanna thing though. What I mean is, I don’t have a moral problem with liking Chris Brown’s music. It’s not like I ever really supported him monetarily in the past (thank you peer to peer and user sharing technology), and I’m definitely not going to now. Doesn’t mean I can’t still rock to it for free.

Chris Brown ft. 2 Chainz & Snoop Dogg – Oh Yeah

Aw shoot. How perfect is that title? Jeremih is back at it. I’m starting to remember why I love Hip Hop/RnB music so much. Fab HAS to be the best one verse surgeon in the game, right? Right!?

Jeremih ft. Fabolous – Ahh Shit

Frank Ocean is starting to remind me why I like Frank Ocean so much. As much as I enjoy “rocking” to the “heaters” (what? I can’t mockingly quote my own words?), this is really why I love RnB music. It’s just so damn fresh. I especially appreciate dudes like Mr. Ocean and Weekend and how they’ve led the way as of late to once again innovate the game.

Frank Ocean – Pyramids

Speaking of innovating artistic geniuses…is it just me, or does Miguel kinda get his Prince on with this one? I don’t mean to offend (if you’re a Prince fan), and honestly I don’t really know that much Prince music in the first place to warrant my judgement. But I don’t know, to me it kinda sounds like something Prince could fuck with. And honestly, If you know anything about Miguel, you wouldn’t be offended. But he kinda Robin Thickes it a lil with the whole whisper song voice too. Ay bitch, wait to you see my dick. Right? Not even a little?

Miguel – Party Life

The Dream is not much of an RnB innovator anymore. He did use to bring back memories of 112, once upon a time at least, and is undoubtedly one of the most immense contributors to the current landscape of the genre. The dude is just too good at what he does; why change now? Seriously, The Dream knows how to make an RnB jam. Remember this?

The Dream ft. Pusha T – Dope Bitch

Next up we got my favorite from ColeCo’s EP – El VeranoThe collection features a handful of solid remix material from some classic RnB smashes, including the featured, “I Wanna Be Down” by Brandy. Where he came up with “Ricky Smiley,” I have no idea. Remember when RnB wasn’t raunchy as hell and female artists had some self respect class? When you compare a song like this from the 90’s, to Rihanna’s “Birthday Cake Remix” of today, you gotta feel a little uneasy about the youth/future of our country.

ColeCo – Ricky Smiley

It’s getting late. I thought it’d be appropriate to finish this post off with a slow jam. Mari-Ohhhh! Bring it back middle school dance style. Please, quit your hating and enjoy.

Mario – Bed Love

Wifey Wednesday: Major Lazer, Florence + The Machine vs Calvin Harris, Miguel, Frank Ocean, Usher + The Hood Internet

Being that it was unfortunately probably my most popular weekly post, I had to bring it back. But I don’t have much time to rant about pointless shit (you’re welcome?) so I’ll just get right into it…

Ursher baby. Dude is like the Tim Duncan of R & B. He quietly keeps coming back to kill this shit! Add a bunch of “HWUH” courtesy of Ricky Ross and you got yourself a hit.

Usher – Let Me See (ft. Rick Ross)

Majah Lazah! More mellow than what we’re use to hearing from these dudes, but amazing nonetheless. I wish I knew how to describe electronically produced sounds, because I would be more specific. But all in all, I love the sounds in this song. Soft female vocals always a plus as well.

Major Lazer – Get Free (ft. Amber of Dirty Projectors)

I went to the Calvin Harris show in Chicago a couple months back…let’s just say I did not fit in. The wifey really likes this one. Me too. Gets the people goin!

Florence + The Machine – Spectrum (Calvin Harris Remix)

I like to think that I discovered Miguel because I fell in love with that “Sure Thing” joint when I heard it off some obscure new school mixtape back in 09 before anyone gave a shit. Obviously, that is ridiculous. But still, I knew dude had talent right from the start. Well, seems like that talent is growing, and “it’s just a matter of time”, literally, before he get’s it all. This one works really well in the motivation department.

Miguel – …ALL

This is the first single/popworthy song I’ve heard from Frank, and I’m not mad either. I do like the obscure dark sounding shit from Mr. Ocean slightly better, but dude has gotta eat, right?

Frank Ocean – PDA

Just in case you weren’t feeling the electronic R & B vibe, you might like the indie.

The Hood Internet – See Youth (Usher // Santigold)

Valentines Day Love Jams: New John Legend, Bei Maejor, Frank Ocean, Kofi Black, Raheem DeVaughn + Classic Baby Makin Playlist

Man, I’ve been missing some quality RnB music in my life for a minute now. Maybe that’s why I’m so tense. I don’t know if it’s that I don’t look in the right places or if it’s that the type of smooth-ass slow jams I grew up loving just aren’t appealing to the masses anymore, and therefore aren’t produced like they use to be. Seriously, how is R. Kelly still putting out albums and I don’t even hear about it? Is it me, or is it the quality? Jagged Edge, 112, where you at!? Slim, I heard that weak-ass solo mixtape dog, give it up and get the crew back together. Well, at least we still got John Legend. I got high hopes for Frank Ocean and The Weeknd, as well. But speaking of the current, I was able to pull together a handful of quality new RnB jams I thought were appropriate for the hallmark holiday. But the real treat is my “Baby Makin’ Music” playlist below. So if you’re in need of something to the set the mood for those late night festivities with the wifey, then look no further. That’s almost a full 80 minutes worth of material, so if you make it through the whole shit you’re a fuckin’ champ. Shit, if I make it through the first 5 songs I’m chalking that one up as a W. Ya’ll can thank me later.

John Legend – Tonight (ft Ludacris)

Bei Meajor – Mesmerized

Frank Ocean – Dust

Kofi Black – I love You Crazy (ft. Raekwon)

Raheem DeVaughn – Be The One (ft. Snoop Dogg)

Wifey Wednesday: Drake ft Lil Wayne, Frank Ocean ft SupaNatra, Cocaine 80s, Drake & The Weeknd + The Dream ft. Big Sean

Wifey Wednesday is back! I’d be lying if I said I do it just for the ladies, cuz these are my jams right here. Love the smooth shit, man. Plus it’s real to me. I been through some shit, I know some girls been through some shit. That’s one of the reasons why I’m feelin’ a lot  of Drake’s music. Yea, he can play it cool and talk about all the chicks he passes through without care, but he also talks about the girls that actually make him stop and say, this chick is for real. He drops a smooth one for us off Take Care, with a little bit of help from his boy weezy…

(MP3): Drake – The Real Her (ft. Lil Wayne)

If you’ve been down with the FUNK, you know I’m diggin Frank Ocean. I don’t remember the whole background to this song, but I’m pretty sure it’s just another Frank Ocean song that this Billionaire Boyscout dude took and remixed with a verse from SupaNatra. I need to get up on my Frank Ocean. Of course I love the piano keys, but really liking this dude’s verse as well. Gotta have some kind of musical connection, or at the very least common ground, with a chick. Well, for anyone who loves music.

(MP3): Frank Ocean & SupaNatra – HER

I hope you listened to my dude Bilkha and copped that cocaine 80’s shit. I’m super high on this joint right here. It comes off his first tape with No I.D. called The Pursuit. Currently, top play on the commute. Sooooo smooth. I feel dude with the lyrics, too.

“you hear it coming from the television
you hear it coming from the mothafuckin government
girl I just wanna tell you something different
thats why I fuck witchu cuz I know you be listenin”

(MP3): Cocaine 80’s – To Tell You the Truth

My boy also posted that JAYBeatz mashup featuring the aforementioned “The Real Her.” Well, dude also created a nice lil mash featuring both Drake & The Weeknd’s perspective versions of “Trust Issues” (The Weeknd won), while mixing in a lil bit of the original “Im On One.” Check it out. If you really liked either one of the originals, I feel like you gotta be on this one.

(MP3): Drake & The Weeknd – Trust Issues (A JAYBeatz Mashup)

Lastly, in case you missed that free album (aka mixtape with high quality original beats) that The Dream (aka Terius Nash) dropped a lil while back, check this joint featuring Big Sean. I was sleeping on this one, but I’m not now. Plan on skipping the foreplay when this one drops. I don’t really know what sexin’ right has to do with ghetto though….

(MP3): The Dream (Terius Nash) – Ghetto (ft Big Sean)

Kanye West and Jay Z – No Church In The Wild [unofficial video]

This is one of the most interesting unofficial videos I’ve ever seen. As a white person, it evokes some intense emotions. Now imagine if it was non-fiction…..

Vodpod videos no longer available.

This is easily my favorite song off “Watch The Throne” so far. Granted of course, that’s always subject to change as time goes by. I hear a lot of people say their favorite is “Made In America.” For me, I really can’t stand to listen to Kanye in that song. His interpretation of the “American Dream” makes me sick. For him, “making it” equates to being rich enough to provide the validation he needs to be the ignorant, materialistic douchebag he has always wanted to be, and without repercussion….because that’s how we value famous people and riches. I don’t know, that’s just my opinion. But it’s pretty sad when that is anyone’s interpretation of “making it” in America.

Frank Ocean – Thinking About You

I don’t have any other smooth ass RnB jams in the set currently, and definitely none worthy of playing on repeat like my man Frank Ocean’s newest joint, so I think he deserves his own post. I don’t know whether to join in with Frank (and the Weeknd for that matter) and get on the ladies’ case for often losing the foresight of working at keepin a good dude around when they got it, or warn the dudes of the dangers in looking too far ahead…when they don’t got shit. Although, every situation does have it’s own circumstances and that’s why being shortsighted AND being farsighted both have their own perils. In conclusion…..I have no fucking clue.

Anyway, Frank is that dude. Be on the look out for him on that Watch The Throne shit. As arrogant and obnoxious as he’s become, Kanye still knows talent, man.

(MP3): Frank Ocean – Thinking About You

Best of….The Funk’s First Half of 2011: Top 10 R&B Slow Jams

I’m pretty sure I had something super insightful to say last night right as I was about to fall asleep, but I was too lazy/unsober to get up and make note of it….That really pisses me off, you know? I need to carry/sleep with a tape recorder so I can “note to self” like Norm McDonald and remember shit to write/talk about.

Anyway, I do remember this morning, and I was thinking about discipline on the way to the bus stop. I have no idea why, but looking back, I wonder if this might have anything to do with my hangover on the way to work…Anyway, I was just thinking about how much discipline it takes to be non violent. And despite what Nas says in his book of rhymes, Gandhi was no fool even if it seems as though the Machiavellians are the ones always getting ahead. Could you imagine what this world might be like had there been no Ghandi or Martin Luther King to provide some balance opposing those who believe it takes “the occasional need for the methodical exercise of brute force, deceit, and so on” (wikipedia) to accomplish their goals? Their ideas will never die and their accomplishments will forever give idealist like myself hope for the people.

Anyway, I guess I‘ve just been on this anti-“hard” tip for a minute. And well the opposite of hard is soft. And since I’m not really into being all hard and shit anymore, that must mean I’m Chris Bosh soft, right? So maybe I am kinda, but shits really not that black and white. Since college though, I have been all about the peace and love (how can they say marijuana is a bad thing?). Actually, always been about the love, just catching up with the peacefulness lately. That’s why RnB has always been one of my favorite genres. Not so much the faster RnB, mostly just the “slow jams.” Yeah, I love me some R. Kelly. This year was HUGE thanks in large part to the emergence of The Weeknd. Dude is gonna blow up big time. By the way, the top of this list is on some classic grammy type shit. I mean some of the best songs I’ve heard in yearZUH, let alone the first half of this one.

10. Collie Buddz – Playback

9. Erykah Badu – Gone Baby, Don’t Be Long

8. John Legend – Rolling in the Deep (remix)

7. Kelly Rowland ft Mario & LIl Wayne – Motivation (remix)

6. The Weeknd – Rolling Stone

5. Miguel ft Pusha T – Sure Thing (remix)

4. The Weeknd – The Morning

3. Frank Ocean – Novacane…..you gotta check the music video for this song. Really fuckin cool, especially how they visually describe the feeling of not having feeling (numb)

2. Drake – Marvin’s Room

1. The Weeknd – High For This
