Wifey Wednesday: RnB Edition! Chris Brown ft Snoop Dogg & 2 Chainz, Jeremih ft Fabolous, Frank Ocean, Miguel, The Dream ft Pusha T, Mario + more
I’ve been waiting for some jams like these for a while now. Maybe I just don’t get after the RnB like I use to, which I don’t, but my timing was impeccable this time around, and consequently I have discovered some heeeeeat-ers. RnB heaters of course, but heaters none the less. First up, C. Breezy who, by the way, I’ve heard has the most
ignorant insane fans in the world….I said heaters, not beaters. I’m kind of over the whole Rihanna thing though. What I mean is, I don’t have a moral problem with liking Chris Brown’s music. It’s not like I ever really supported him monetarily in the past (thank you peer to peer and user sharing technology), and I’m definitely not going to now. Doesn’t mean I can’t still rock to it for free.
Aw shoot. How perfect is that title? Jeremih is back at it. I’m starting to remember why I love Hip Hop/RnB music so much. Fab HAS to be the best one verse surgeon in the game, right? Right!?
Frank Ocean is starting to remind me why I like Frank Ocean so much. As much as I enjoy “rocking” to the “heaters” (what? I can’t mockingly quote my own words?), this is really why I love RnB music. It’s just so damn fresh. I especially appreciate dudes like Mr. Ocean and Weekend and how they’ve led the way as of late to once again innovate the game.
Speaking of innovating artistic geniuses…is it just me, or does Miguel kinda get his Prince on with this one? I don’t mean to offend (if you’re a Prince fan), and honestly I don’t really know that much Prince music in the first place to warrant my judgement. But I don’t know, to me it kinda sounds like something Prince could fuck with. And honestly, If you know anything about Miguel, you wouldn’t be offended. But he kinda Robin Thickes it a lil with the whole whisper song voice too. Ay bitch, wait to you see my dick. Right? Not even a little?
The Dream is not much of an RnB innovator anymore. He did use to bring back memories of 112, once upon a time at least, and is undoubtedly one of the most immense contributors to the current landscape of the genre. The dude is just too good at what he does; why change now? Seriously, The Dream knows how to make an RnB jam. Remember this?
Next up we got my favorite from ColeCo’s EP – El Verano. The collection features a handful of solid remix material from some classic RnB smashes, including the featured, “I Wanna Be Down” by Brandy. Where he came up with “Ricky Smiley,” I have no idea. Remember when RnB wasn’t raunchy as hell and female artists had some
self respect class? When you compare a song like this from the 90’s, to Rihanna’s “Birthday Cake Remix” of today, you gotta feel a little uneasy about the youth/future of our country.
It’s getting late. I thought it’d be appropriate to finish this post off with a slow jam. Mari-Ohhhh! Bring it back middle school dance style. Please, quit your hating and enjoy.
Weekend Rap Up: B.o.B.,The ILLZ, YONAS, Freddie Gibbs & Madlib, Dave Raps, Nas ft Rick Ross, Pusha T ft. Swizz Beatz, French Montana ft. Drake & Wayne & RossMeek Mill & Wale & MMG + More
How unnecessarily long is that title? Lots of featured appearances in this week’s Rap Up, and more than a couple different styles and sounds at work as well. One particular sound that stands out from the rest is The ILLZ. If you haven’t noticed, I’m a BIG fan of the indie rap movement. You know, that introspective shit over simple guitar strings, piano, and other indie rock samples. They really are a perfect match for eachother. The lyrics are meant to be listened to intently, and the musical backdrop is one that not only eliminates unnecessary distractions but also elicits emotion in of itself. That’s why I dig The ILLZ. The dude reeks of realness. B.o.B. is the same, when he’s at his best at least. Unfortunately being at your best and making money are two separate things these days in the music biz, or at least in hip hop. So you might not find many more like this off Strange Clouds, but that doesn’t take away from great pieces like this.
The ILLZ – Closer (Temper Trap sample)
Yonas is another up and comer you should already be mindful of. He’s been doing his thing in the mixtape game for a few years now, and eventually he’ll have built up a distinguishable enough rapport with his fan base that he can put out pretty much any type of record and he’ll sell some. That’s the name of the mixtape game, right? Love the pre-fame mixtape game (see B.o.B.). YONAS really isn’t on that level yet, but he definitely knows how to take someone else’s hot beat, and no matter how played out, make it his own so that you can listen again.
Freddie deserves a considerable amount of respect for his lyrical game. He’s not flashy, he doesn’t have a tag line to repeat 12+ times a song, and he doesn’t spit so utterly simple and slow that you could teach a 2 year old to
be ignorant as hell follow along. Sometimes it does take a beautiful soul sample like this to truly appreciate him.
Dave Raps delivered one of my favorite songs of 2011 in “Alive” off his mixtape H.Y.P.E. So I copped his latest effort AKA Dave Ruffin and spotted this lil gem. Take a listen.
Ohhhhh boy! Life Is Good is almost here. Nas drops his latest studio effort on July 17th and I can’t wait. Nas is my favorite rapper, hands down. There’s no one like him. We’ll talk more when his shit drops and I get the full effect. In this one, Nas calls out all the fakers out there that really aint shit. Ross delivers an excellent verse by the way. I’m serious. I might be too hard on him. I just can’t get over the fact that he literally only raps about 4 things; cocaine, cars, money, and girls he would never fuck without the first 3.
Since I’m on the subject of Rick Ross, I might as well just jump head first into that m-m-m-m-maybach music. I like this mayback music…kinda. The Meek joint is off his mixtape Dreamchasers 2 and dude does justice to one of the greatest instrumentals/songs of all time; The Fugees – Ready or Not. The Power circle joint is off Self Made vol 2. I must say, that’s a helluva lineup MMG is touting.
I know, I know. I’m not supposed to post shit I don’t truly listen to. But even in this next one’s case, there IS a time and a place. It just so happens that that time and place doesn’t fit into my usual listening patterns. This Pusha joint I can fuck with on the regular though. Does Swizz Beats do anything but drive around in his fancy cars anymore?
Wifey Wednesday: Iggy Azalea, Drake & Rihanna, Vybz Kartel ft Pusha T, The Knocks, Flo-Rida ft Christina Aguilara, De-Lor + Nicki Minaj
It was nice getting back to finding music this weekend. It was especially nice to have about 3 weeks worth of material to choose from, just made my post organization that much easier. Of course I came up on enough decent material to get my hungry rap fiends their weekly dish on Sunday. I was also able to pull together a handful of quality mashups that were just made for Monday, alliteratively speaking of course. (side note, I can’t believe alliteratively is a real word and I have no idea if I just utilized it properly.) Tuesday was filled with some different solid weird shit, and here we are on Wednesday with a plateful for the wifeys. And by wifey material I just mean common ground I could see myself sharing with some lady friends from the past and present….It just so happens I know a lot of white girls.
I’m not gonna lie, I’m kinda down with the Aussie white girl swag. I don’t know all about that “mean” intro, but this beat is nice and she actually flows pretty decent in the second verse. I like Azealia Bank’s “212” better, still. But then again Iggy does advise, “this is for the bitches getting money up in here.” I’m disqualified in more ways than one.
Iggy Azalea – My World (right-click, “save as” to dl)
Forget the wifey, this is my jam right here. Think Gyptian, Serani, or any amazing reggae jam. I literally have trouble not winding it up immediately when this song comes on.
Vybz Kartel – Half On A Baby (remix) (ft. Pusha T) (right-click, “save as” to dl)
I think I’ve shared my fondness for Drake for various reasons in the past, so I’ll leave all that alone. But I do like his response to people calling him soft in “Lord Knows” and feel like pointing it out….
“I’m hearin’ all of the jokes, I know that they’re trying to push me
I know that showing emotion don’t ever mean I’m a pussy
Know that I don’t make music for niggas who don’t get pussy
so those are the ones I count on to diss me overlook me”
Drake – Take Care (ft. Rihanna) (Syko Remix) (right-click, “save as” to dl)
The Knocks just put me in a good mood. All their music is just so happy, it’s really nice. Especially with most of the depressing shit I usually listen to. Personally, I like this remix better than the original. Lucky me (and you), the remix is free……..I’m just
waiting for dreading the day someone figures out how to really end online sharing, or finally make it profitable and therefor non-inclusive.
The Knocks – Brightside (TheFatRat Remix) (right-click, “save as” to dl)
I have never heard one song go through so many official makeovers in my life. This is actually a pretty good remix. Christina’s got quite the voice on her.
Flo-Rida – Good Feeling (Official Remix) (ft. Christina Aguilara) (right-click, “save as” to dl)
So whenever I write a post I just continually listen through the list songs I plan on sharing over and over while I think of things to write (this usually lasts at least an hour or two). I’m not going to lie; I’m already sick of this song and not sure what really made me want to download it in the first place. But I figured it kinda sounds like a Taio Cruz song so some of my white girls gotta dig it, right?
De-Lor – Your Body (Sexy Ray Vision Remix) (right-click, “save as” to dl)
I found these a while ago and threw them on a playlist, but I never actually shared the links. Enjoy free remix music while you still can people!
Nicki Minaj – Moment 4 Life (ft. Drake) (DJ Kue Remix) (right-click, “save as” to dl)
Captain Cuts – Dancing With Avicii (Avicii // The Knocks) (right-click, “save as” to dl)
I’m pretty sure I had something super insightful to say last night right as I was about to fall asleep, but I was too lazy/unsober to get up and make note of it….That really pisses me off, you know? I need to carry/sleep with a tape recorder so I can “note to self” like Norm McDonald and remember shit to write/talk about.
Anyway, I do remember this morning, and I was thinking about discipline on the way to the bus stop. I have no idea why, but looking back, I wonder if this might have anything to do with my hangover on the way to work…Anyway, I was just thinking about how much discipline it takes to be non violent. And despite what Nas says in his book of rhymes, Gandhi was no fool even if it seems as though the Machiavellians are the ones always getting ahead. Could you imagine what this world might be like had there been no Ghandi or Martin Luther King to provide some balance opposing those who believe it takes “the occasional need for the methodical exercise of brute force, deceit, and so on” (wikipedia) to accomplish their goals? Their ideas will never die and their accomplishments will forever give idealist like myself hope for the people.
Anyway, I guess I‘ve just been on this anti-“hard” tip for a minute. And well the opposite of hard is soft. And since I’m not really into being all hard and shit anymore, that must mean I’m Chris Bosh soft, right? So maybe I am kinda, but shits really not that black and white. Since college though, I have been all about the peace and love (how can they say marijuana is a bad thing?). Actually, always been about the love, just catching up with the peacefulness lately. That’s why RnB has always been one of my favorite genres. Not so much the faster RnB, mostly just the “slow jams.” Yeah, I love me some R. Kelly. This year was HUGE thanks in large part to the emergence of The Weeknd. Dude is gonna blow up big time. By the way, the top of this list is on some classic grammy type shit. I mean some of the best songs I’ve heard in yearZUH, let alone the first half of this one.
3. Frank Ocean – Novacane…..you gotta check the music video for this song. Really fuckin cool, especially how they visually describe the feeling of not having feeling (numb)
Wifey Wednesday: The Weeknd, Miguel ft Pusha T, Pitbull ft Chris Brown, ODi ft Andrre + Lil Wayne (hmmm)
This dude is the shit. He was making reference tracks for Drake for a minute under the name “The Noise,” but I think he’s really hit stride with this new softer/darker sound as “The Weeknd.” Talk about talented….sheeeeeit.
Since we’re talking about talented, let’s talk about my skills out there on the diamond, eh? Seriously though, competition is a must. Not just competition, but physical competition. I love that shit. Might need to take it down a notch or two for the co-ed 16″ league I’m in, but you play to win the game, right Herm? What were we talking about? Nevermind. Miguel dropped this track about 2 years ago, and I was on it from the very star (no lie). Dude already got blessed by J. Cole on “All I Want Is You” and here he gets some help from an even bigger rap name. Great fucking song….way before Pusha decided to piggy-back the hype.
I don’t like this, but chicks do. Pitbull’s next single?
I don’t know why I’m including this song in the wifey wrap up, but I’ve been holding onto it for way too long and now seems like the best time to share. Not even sure if the wifeys dig this shit, but very cool song, regardless. Very cool remix. Shit picks up after the 1:30 mark…
This song is absolutely awful. I’m just posting it to show you how far Lil Wayne has stooped to make money. This is fucking garbage. Honestly, is this really gonna be on Carter IV? This has to be a throwaway they leaked for the hell of it, right? I hope so….for the sake of all you Wayne fans out there. And yes, I went there with the “Wayne stay kissing babies” pic. That’s what haters do.
Weekend Rap Up: Termanology ft Joell Ortiz, Bun B, Saigon & Freeway, Mac Miller, Theophilus London, Young Chris, YC ft Twista + Trae ft Meek Mill & Pusha T
One might think the all star packed line up of spitters would easily be the standout component in this one, but Term more than holds his own. Honestly, I think he’s got the second best verse behind Joell. And you know they take pride in their shit, so when they all get on a track together, they all come correct. This beat is so smooth. You know I’m diggin the piano keys.
(click to DL)Termanology ft Joell Ortiz, Bun B, Saigon, Freeway – Say It (remix)
I’ve seen this Theophilus dude pop up around the net, and always read good things about him, but just haven’t come across a joint I really got into…until now. I think this single can help him climb up a rung in terms of exposure and appreciation. At least I know I will be taking a closer listen each time I see his name going forward.
(click to DL)Theophilus London – Last Name London
(click to DL)Young Chris – Hey Lover
I wanted to post this just to emphasize how great it is that Raps can be added to almost any instrumental, no matter the genre. Remember when Puff seemingly revolutionized the game when he took hits from the 80’s and made em sound so crazy? Well thanks to the mixtape game, the internet, and producers/artists with overlapping musical tastes, we are able to hear these magical fusions within a week of the original and before millions of dollars are spent to get the sample cleared.
(click to DL)Mac Miller – Love Lost (ft. Temper Trap)
(click to DL)YC ft Twista – Racks (remix)
I love the beat, love the sample, and most importantly, love Trae’s raspy ass voice. Dude can handle a mic on his own, but some help from Maybach Music Group member Meek Mill and G.O.O.D. Music affiliate Pusha T doesn’t hurt at all. Meek Milli wins.

Weekend Rap Up: Childish Gambino, B.o.B., Mac Miller, Pusha T, Gorilla Warfare Tactics, The Five One
“There’s probably 6 or 7 girls who think this song’s about em”
If you’ve been following along, you know that I’m most passionate about music that reaches me on a personal level. By admitting this, even if you don’t know me personally, you’ve already got a glimpse into my mind. I’m pretty transparent in person as well, to high degree of fault at times. This is the very reason I’m so high on Donald Glover. This first song is a recently mastered track originally created a while ago, apparently while drunk. The second one comes off the recent Childish Gambino – EP.
Bobby Ray is really all over the place when it comes to musical style. “No genre” isn’t just the name of a mixtape, it’s the truth. He’s been on a lot of different sounding, feel good shit for a while, displaying this wide versatility. Finally, he comes back with that lyrical pain over some heavy drums for all the true hip hop heads, and haters alike.
Ok, dude is starting to grow on me….a lil bit. I can still say I’m not a huge fan, but definitely can’t hate though. I do think his persona is a major determining factor in his popularity, but whose isn’t? This first one comes off the recently released XXL’s 2011 Freshman Class: The Mixtape. The second one is quite a bit older, but I can definitely relate…minus the dro.
If you’re into the typical coke, money and sex raps (Rick Ross, Young Jeezy, etc.) then you’re probably also a big fan of Pusha. As usual, he delivers all of the above over some dope beats in his latest mixtape release Fear of God. Already posted a couple tracks that leaked before the release, but here’s another one I enjoyed after taking a listen to the tape myself.
Don’t know a whole lot about these guys, but I do know the classic hip hop heads can definitely dig this shit. Actually, just did a lil research and turns out they’re three Indian kids in college. Amazing how far reaching hip hop has become over the last 20 years. I love it. More importantly, I love this beat. This one is off their recent mixtape Premier.
“You’re cute, you look like Topenga before she got fat”
Ha. Just a feel good track to close out the rap up. These dudes put together a nice track right here sampling Semisonic’s 90’s smash hit “Closing Time” without sounding corny as shit. Well done.
