Mixtape Monday: Childish Gambino’s “Royalty”, Terry Urban ft. Nas x Amy Winehouse + Chi Duly x The Weeknd
I was out of town all weekend and still adjusting to life back at work so I haven’t been up on enough new music to share any specific jams. But it’s been too long since my last post, so here’s a couple of mixtapes I’ll be paying closer attention to over the next week that I think you might find appealing as well.
Donald finally released his latest mixtape effort on the 4th (I think) after weeks of leaks. Definitely looking forward to diving into this one to uncover what’s been running through Mr. Glover’s mind. Good thing I have a 45 minute commute to and from work….
Terry Urrrrrrrban has created what I can only assume to be another masterpiece, as I have yet to get into it. But the thought of Nas’ lyricism over some Amy Winehouse melodies has got me pretty excited. I have a feeling this will be one of those tapes that just doesn’t get old. Just press play and let it ride.
Chi Duly gives The Weeknd a little bit of a kick with this next one. It’s been out for a minute but I just came up on it, so in case you haven’t yet…
This.Is.The Remix: The Hood Internet (Wale vs Kavinsky), Ted Smooth (Drake ft. The Weeknd) & Trae Tha Truth ft. Big K.R.I.T., Jadakiss, J. Cole, Kendrick Lamar, B.o.B., + more
…or I guess it should read, “THESE. ARE. The remixES.” If you didn’t know, I am quite fond of “the remix.” Even when it’s not quite as good as the original, it’s still refreshing to hear a good song in a different light, or from a new perspective.
First up we got a quality mashup from one of the best. The Hood Internet takes Wale’s Chain Music and throws it over some dark, whiteboy electronic instrumental courtesy of Kavinsky. Never heard of dude(?), but….diggin it.
Next we got this simple Ted Smooth remix utilizing some slowed down percussion from Biggie’s “I Got A Story to Tell” mixed in with Drake’s “Crew Love.” Pretty subtle addition, but new life nonetheless.
Lastly, we have a classic example of the hip hop remix. Whenever someone is lucky enough to snag a beat/hook like this, it’s inevitable that they’ll be at least 10-15 rappers trying to jump on that shit. The original was star studded enough with the likes of Wale, Wiz, Lupe, and Big Boi, but it just got another lift with some even NEWER schoolers (K.R.I.T., J. Cole, Kendrick) and more importantly, the REAL Mark Morrison! WHOOOOOAAAAAAAAAOOOOHHHH!
If you haven’t heard by now, Take Care leaked….I did come across this one individually at GMAD or HHU though and I think I’m going to hold off on listening to the rest until the official release. I’m starting to look at downloading music in a little bit of a different light. I mean, most of the rap/hip hop music I come across is purposely leaked to the internet for free, so that’s not what I’m talking about. It’s the full length studio albums that I feel guilty about. I’m not gonna pretend like I never do it anymore, but for artists I respect and know are going to put out something of quality? Gotta support ’em and pay up, even if the label reaps the most benefit.
But back to this song, I’m really glad Drake went with a “The Weeknd” type of song instead of taking dude out of his element and trying to throw him on some YMCMB garbage. I still have questions about this “The Weeknd” fellow. Does he have a producer with him? Does he produce all his shit himself? Does he realize how annoying it is to have to use “The Weeknd” as a proper noun over and over? Regardless, I love this sound, and really like this song. Reminds me of something off his first project, House of Balloons. I hope The Weeknd can fight off the mainstream makeover, because it’s coming. Very soon.

Wifey Wednesday: Drake ft Lil Wayne, Frank Ocean ft SupaNatra, Cocaine 80s, Drake & The Weeknd + The Dream ft. Big Sean
Wifey Wednesday is back! I’d be lying if I said I do it just for the ladies, cuz these are my jams right here. Love the smooth shit, man. Plus it’s real to me. I been through some shit, I know some girls been through some shit. That’s one of the reasons why I’m feelin’ a lot of Drake’s music. Yea, he can play it cool and talk about all the chicks he passes through without care, but he also talks about the girls that actually make him stop and say, this chick is for real. He drops a smooth one for us off Take Care, with a little bit of help from his boy weezy…
If you’ve been down with the FUNK, you know I’m diggin Frank Ocean. I don’t remember the whole background to this song, but I’m pretty sure it’s just another Frank Ocean song that this Billionaire Boyscout dude took and remixed with a verse from SupaNatra. I need to get up on my Frank Ocean. Of course I love the piano keys, but really liking this dude’s verse as well. Gotta have some kind of musical connection, or at the very least common ground, with a chick. Well, for anyone who loves music.
I hope you listened to my dude Bilkha and copped that cocaine 80’s shit. I’m super high on this joint right here. It comes off his first tape with No I.D. called The Pursuit. Currently, top play on the commute. Sooooo smooth. I feel dude with the lyrics, too.
“you hear it coming from the television
you hear it coming from the mothafuckin government
girl I just wanna tell you something different
thats why I fuck witchu cuz I know you be listenin”
My boy also posted that JAYBeatz mashup featuring the aforementioned “The Real Her.” Well, dude also created a nice lil mash featuring both Drake & The Weeknd’s perspective versions of “Trust Issues” (The Weeknd won), while mixing in a lil bit of the original “Im On One.” Check it out. If you really liked either one of the originals, I feel like you gotta be on this one.
Lastly, in case you missed that free album (aka mixtape with high quality original beats) that The Dream (aka Terius Nash) dropped a lil while back, check this joint featuring Big Sean. I was sleeping on this one, but I’m not now. Plan on skipping the foreplay when this one drops. I don’t really know what sexin’ right has to do with ghetto though….
i was graciously handed a set of keys to this blog, so “Let Me Ride”…i was just talking about the current state of music with my fiance the other day, and we both agreed that download-able music has got us all searching for “Dat New New”…music is so disposable nowadays, once it leaves my ‘Recently Added Playlist’ on iTunes, it’s just wasting hard-drive space…the worst part of it is, the quality of the work from major artists is suffering…ahhem…“Watch The Throne”…“Tha Carter IV”…“Bad Meets Evil: Hell The Sequel”…LUCKILY, my dude has been saving us all with his postings on whitemencantfunk…he put me onto “House of Balloons”…changed my life…personally, i think i’ve always been ahead of the curve with hip hop, but it might be because i get my music faster than the rest of you…either way… my taste may seem a little more ‘commercial’, but this is what I bump…so stay tuned…because brown men can’t funk neither.

Monster Mixtape Monday: Wale (Eleven One Eleven Theory), The Weeknd (Thursday) + Big K.R.I.T. (Last King 2: God’s Machine)
So we had some heat released at the end of last week including new Wale, Big K.R.I.T., and the long awaited (not even 6 months, but still too long) follow up from The Weeknd. I finally got through my first full listen of em all, so you know I had to share with everyone. I probably should have split these up in their own posts because I just realized it won’t let me post my play button, so you’ll just have to take the extra 5 seconds to open Hulkshare and take a listen. Don’t be lazy….like me.
First up, we had Wale’s mixtape titled The Eleven One Eleven Theory, as in the release date for his upcoming album Ambition. As you all know, Wale is my dude. Not only is his flow and word play better than most rappers out today, dude is smarter than almost all of them. He creates songs, not just verses. He touches on subjects that others wouldn’t even think of delving into. And he does it all with a style unlike any other dude in the game. You know I respect individuality, especially when It’s not something that is often rewarded. When Wale makes it, and he will, not only does he have something to be truly proud of, but he sets an example for the next generation of up and coming spitters who want to make it, but who might have given up because of their reluctance to succumb to the ignorant subject matter that seems to be a contributing factor in the quick money making formula. Check the highlights from the tape (outside of “Ocean Drive”, “Lacefrontin” and “Bait” which were already posted) and go out and purchase Ambition when it comes out to help change the game.
(MP3): Wale – Fuck You
(MP3): Wale – Chain Music
(MP3): Wale – Barry Sanders
(MP3): Wale – Varsity Blues
Next up we got The Weeknd and his latest project titled Thursday. Why this came out on Friday, I’ll never understand. Regardless, this dude is the epitome of originality in RnB. Hell, I haven’t heard something this unique in ANY genre in the past couple years. I don’t know if he handles his own production or what, but his voice and melody is absolutely perfect for the vibe his instrumentals provide. Not to mention his subject matter is deeper than the typical “I can fuck you better” type shit. Why does it always seem like the deeper you get, the darker you get? I told you back when House of Balloons dropped, this dude is goin’ places. I still prefer the first tape, but this is definitely no consolation prize. I also like how he keeps a low profile too. Keep it real, and keep putting out beautiful music dude. Check some joints fresh to the funk, and use the search to look up the previously posted gems “The Birds Pt. 1” & “Rolling Stone.”
(MP3): The Weeknd – Lonely Star
(MP3): The Weeknd – The Birds pt. 2
(MP3): The Weeknd – Gone
Last but certainly not least, we got the newest Big K.R.I.T. project. I don’t think I could ever say I’ve had enough Krizzle, but this should hold us over for a little bit while we wait for the debut LP to drop. This mixtape is nothing compared to Return of 4eva, but it’s still got that same K.R.I.T. vibe I’ve come to love. You know, the kind of soulful jazzy type instrumentals run over by that pimp talk mixed in with real life. Too many features in my opinion, but that’s to be expected from a tape consisting mostly of features from himself on other dude’s joints. Already posted jams like “On the Corner” and “Happy Birthday Hip Hop” but here are the next best off the tape.
Wifey Wednesday: Lights Over Paris ft Game & Ty$ & YG, Matt & Kim ft Soulja Boy & Andrew W.K., The Weeknd + Digitalism
So I had a pretty productive day today (all of which came AFTER work of course). While waiting for a phone call after work, I stopped in the Sears around the corner and decided to do a little spontaneous shopping. Ended up spending a total of $80 while coming out with 5 new shirts. That’s bargain shopping right there boys and girls. Solid shit too though. Who knew Sears’ young men’s section was like a giant Zumies sales rack? After that I got a couple mile run in, gave myself a haircut (someone’s gonna have to check my neck line out though, shit’s gotta be fucked), and now I’m getting my daily blog post WHILE cooking dinner. Hold up, gotta check on my mac n cheese….
Mmmm, spirals are like a delicacy. I read an article today on HuffPost about how there may be underlying psychological issues at play in adults who are extremely picky eaters, often relying only on the foods they ate as children. While I do still love hot dogs and mac n cheese, I really think the only underlying factor in my case is that I’m just fuckin lazy and can’t cook for shit. Moving on….
I’m also trying to catch the end of the Sox game tonight, so I don’t have time to write a whole bunch about these songs individually. If I had cable in my new crib, that wouldn’t be an issue. I’m still up in the air if I wanna get it or not. On the one hand, 90% of television programs actually make you 100% dumber. Plus I wouldn’t be on this blog-post-per-day tear had I the luxury of sitting on my ass getting dumber. On the other hand, I don’t know how long I can keep up this pay-per-view like bar tab every time the Sox game is on. Shit, the Tribe just took the lead. I gotta get to the bar around the corner, I’ll be back….why am I talking to myself right now?
(2 hours later)
Damn. Well, at least the Twins came through for us. Thome coming up big. This blog is about music right? Alright, well let’s get to it…
I’m not a gangsta, I just keep it.
(sidenote: no one could figure out Ty$’s name so now he’s decided to go ahead and spell it all the way out. Sucks dude. That was so fucking gangsta before)
Converse got this thing where they put together a group of random artists and make a track together. Last year was Cudi and some other fools. This shit actually kinda works…I still don’t condone anyone listening to Soulja Boy though (smh at memories of myself “crankin that” on the dance floor back in college. Fuck it, I still killed that shit)
“Till you’re use to my face, and my mystery fades….I gotchu”….new mixtape “Thursday” coming soon!
I don’t know. Snatched this shit off Earmilk today, just kinda diggin the vibe.
(MP3): Digitalism – 2 Hearts
